In December 2025, Crowley awarded the Thomas B. Crowley Sr. Memorial Scholarship to outstanding American students pursuing careers that will sustain and strengthen the nation’s maritime workforce at our nation’s maritime academies.

The scholarship, established in 1994 to honor the legacy of Thomas B. Crowley Sr., recognizes exceptional academic achievement and dedication to maritime careers. Since its inception, the program has invested more than $3 million in scholarships and supported over 1,000 students across the United States.

This year’s recipients come from institutions including Texas A&M University at Galveston, Maine Maritime Academy, U.S. Merchant Marine Academy, Massachusetts Maritime Academy, and SUNY Maritime College — demonstrating the breadth of talent entering the U.S. maritime workforce. They are studying marine science, marine engineering, maritime logistics, and shipyard management, among other disciplines that are essential to sustaining America’s maritime industrial base.

Supporting students in maritime education is vital to the strength and resilience of the U.S. maritime industry. As the nation’s fleet grows under laws like the Jones Act — which requires vessels transporting goods between U.S. ports to be built, owned, and crewed by Americans — having a pipeline of skilled professionals ready to lead is more important than ever. A well-trained workforce ensures safe operations in shipyards, on deck, and in maritime logistics networks that power American trade and security.

With the average annual cost of the six non-federal maritime academies ranging from $30,000 to $60,000, according to reporting from Professional Mariner, these scholarships are critical to making high-paying family-wage careers accessible to talented Americans.

Crowley’s scholarship program not only honors the memory of a leader in this industry but also reflects a long-term commitment to the future of American maritime dominance. By investing in students today, the company helps ensure a cadre of thoughtful, capable leaders who will propel U.S. maritime commerce, infrastructure, and national security forward into the next generation.
